FSSAI Registration
FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration in India is an obligation to start a food or related business. The FSSAI license is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India and the State Food Authority are jointly responsible for enforcing FSAI regulations. FSSAI is responsible for the registration and licensing of Food operator operators and sets the rules and regulations for conducting any food or related food business in India.
FSSAI is taking steps to protect food law and fair business by establishing food standards to regulate food production.
What is FSSAI?
FSSAI – Food Security and General Authority of India is an independent organization established under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI license is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through regulation.
Who Needs a FSSAI License / Registration in India?
FSSAI / Registration in India is mandatory for all food and food related businesses, this 14-digit license number provides us with information about the manufacturer’s consent.
The following mandatory businesses need to obtain FSSAI Registration or License.

Who can get a FSSAI license?
All Food Business operators including small businesses need to obtain an FSSAI license. Based on the size of the business they can choose a medium, regional, or basic license.
Major Food Producers, Exporters, Exporters who trade in big food business are required to obtain FSSAI Registration in India from the central government. Although small and medium-sized business units, carriers, retailers, retailers are required to apply for [state license] to the state government.
Production units with a capacity of 2 MT per day, milk units hold 5000 liters per day. Re-packing, re-labeling of units, canteens, catering businesses regardless of the cost of applying for a FSSAI Regional License in India.

Types of FSSAI license
- Basic FSSAI License

- FSSAI Central License
Basic License – A Basic License is required if the annual profit is less than Rs.12 lakh.
State License – A regional license must be obtained when the annual profit is between 12-20 crores. When re-packaging, re-labeling a business no matter how profitable the business is should be licensed by the State.
Medium License – If the annual profit exceeds 20 crores the food business must apply for a Medium license.
Based on annual profits the operator of the food business must obtain a FSSAI License. Therefore, a person must obtain an FSSAI License before starting a business as there are certain penalties and legal costs as the FSSAI rules are strict.
Who Can Get FSSAI Registration?
FSSAI registration is required for all small food businesses. FSSAI registration in India is required for the following businesses:
- Any Food Business Worker with an annual income of less than Rs.20 lakh.
- A small retailer working with food products.
- Any person who manufactures or sells any food alone
- Food sales at temporary outlets
- Anyone sharing a meal at a religious or social event (other than the caterer)

What is the process for obtaining a FSSAI License / Requirement?
FSSAI registration is done by submitting a Form A (application for registration) or Form B (application for Regional and Central License) to the Food and Safety Department or by applying to the FoSCoS portal.
The application must be accompanied by the required documentation, must be submitted to the Food and Safety Department or downloaded online from the FoSCoS Portal while completing the application.
This application may be approved or rejected by the department within 7 days from the date of application and the refusal will be communicated to the requester in writing.
Suppose an apology is accepted by the department and you have to provide a registration certificate with the registration number and photograph of the applicant.
The Food Business Operator needs to clearly display the registration certificate in the main business area during business hours.
All standard documents required for Basic, Regional, and Central Registration are passport-size photographs, proof of photo ID.

Penalties and Offenses
Penalty for conducting business without a FSSAI license
In the event that the person or operator of the food business himself who is licensed to produce, sell, store or distribute, or import any goods to obtain food without a license means an offense punishable by imprisonment for up to six months and a fine of Rs. 5 lakh.
Penalties for False advertisement
Any person who publishes or participates in an ad publication:
- You are misinterpreting food or
- It is likely to mislead the environment or object or quality of any food or false guarantee then it will be liable to a fine which can be extended to ten rakh lakh.
How do you renew an FSSAI license?
The FSSAI license in India is very important for starting a food business as the legitimacy of the business is 1 to 5 years the business must apply for renewal 30 days before the expiry of the current license.
